House Clearance Grays - Health & Safety Policy
This policy sets out the commitment of
House Clearance Grays to provide a safe working environment for staff, contractors and the public while delivering professional house clearance and rubbish removal services. The purpose of this document is to define responsibilities, safe systems of work and the practical controls that underpin our waste removal company operations. It applies to all employees, temporary staff and subcontractors engaged in clearance work across our service area.
Scope and Objectives
Our objective is to carry out every clearance and rubbish collection task with a consistent focus on safety, minimising risk to people and property. This covers domestic clearances, estate clearance, commercial tidy-ups and associated
rubbish removal service activities. We will actively reduce incidents through training, supervision and the use of appropriate equipment, and by encouraging a culture where safety is regarded as integral to quality service.

Responsibilities
Management will ensure resources are available for safe operations, including equipment, training and supervision. All team leaders must ensure safe systems are followed on site.
Employees are required to follow procedures, attend training and report hazards. Contractors must comply with this policy and provide evidence of competence before working with us. Everyone on site has the responsibility to stop unsafe work and seek guidance rather than risking injury.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before any clearance job the team will conduct a site-specific risk assessment to identify hazards such as sharps, hazardous materials, unstable structures, vermin or heavy items. A written plan will outline control measures, required tools and personal protective equipment (PPE). Where unknown risks are suspected, work will be stopped until the hazard has been assessed and controlled.

Training and Competence
All operatives receive induction and role-specific training covering manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle loading and segregation of waste. Training is periodically refreshed and records are maintained. New staff and subcontractors are assessed for competence before independent work is permitted. We emphasise ongoing learning: toolbox talks, on-site mentoring and
rubbish clearance briefings ensure the team remains competent.
Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing
Appropriate PPE is mandatory on every job and includes gloves, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and eye protection where required. Additional PPE such as respirators or chemical-resistant gloves will be used when indicated by risk assessment. PPE is issued, inspected and replaced as necessary, and staff are trained in correct use and care.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling guidance is central to preventing musculoskeletal injury. Teams are trained to assess loads, plan lifts, use mechanical aids and adopt safe handling techniques. Where items are too heavy or bulky, two-person lifts or mechanical lifting aids are used. Eradicating risky lifts through planning and use of equipment is a core part of our house clearance service approach.

Hazardous Materials and Waste Segregation
We treat potential hazardous items—such as batteries, solvents, paint, asbestos-containing materials, medical waste and contaminated items—with caution. These items are separated, packaged and disposed of according to accepted waste handling practices and transferred only to authorised facilities. Our policy promotes correct segregation to protect crew health and the environment, ensuring our waste collection and rubbish removal processes meet safe handling expectations.

Vehicles, Plant and Equipment Safety
Vehicles and plant are maintained to a high standard with regular inspections and records. Drivers follow vehicle safety protocols including load restraint, secure covering of loads and safe driving practices within the service area. Equipment such as trolleys, sack trucks, lifting straps and powered tools are inspected before each use; defective items are removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Incident Reporting and First Aid
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences are reported, recorded and investigated to prevent recurrence. First aid provisions are available on site and staff are informed of the location of first aid kits and the identity of trained first aiders. Prompt reporting enables effective investigation and improvement of safety systems.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Our safety performance is monitored through audits, spot checks and review of incident data. Policies and procedures are reviewed regularly and updated to reflect changes in work methods, legislation and industry best practice.
Continuous improvement is achieved by learning from incidents, staff feedback and ongoing training.
Commitment and Communication
House Clearance Grays is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for everyone involved in house clearances and rubbish collection tasks. Safety expectations are communicated clearly to staff, subcontractors and clients during the planning and execution of work. We will ensure that safety is embedded in every clearance job by promoting clear roles, robust procedures and a proactive safety culture across our clearance and waste removal operations.
